    Political Action

    About

Because governments create policies and pass laws that have a direct impact on workers' lives, our members make their concerns known and work together to influence politicians through the PSAC's political action committees. Members also work with other progressive groups and coalitions to promote alternative policies which benefit workers, their families and communities.

    Employment: Full-time policy needed

OTTAWA – “Higher unemployment. Massive loss of full-time jobs. Lower participation rate. Public sector and private sector, there is serious deterioration in the job market,” says Ken Georgetti, president of the Canadian Labour Congress about today’s Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey.  (See below detailed analysis by the Canadian Labour Congress’ Senior Economist Sylvain Schetagne.)

NDP Writes Law Banning Unfair ATM Fees

The NDP is challenging Conservatives to stand up to big banks and support a new law banning unfair ATM fees. With bank hours getting shorter and branches closing, ordinary Canadians are being forced to use cash-gouging ATMs more and more.

    Victory for Highlands Links Workers

On December 22, Parks Canada workers at Highlands Links Golf Course received news that the course would remain a federally operated and maintained facility. This announcement ensured that 30 + members will remain public sector workers and continue to have the wages and benefits they deserve. In 2005, Parks Canada conducted an overview of Highlands Links financial and future management options, proposing various options of privatization for Highlands Links. In April of 2006, the PSAC, National Component and Local 80016 launched a successful, Stop Highlands Links Privatization Campaign.

With the new management framework, Parks will manage and maintain the course, with a not-for-profit group operating the concessions. All profit from the concessions will be returned to the course. This framework not only ensures stable employment for workers, but also stabilizes the economic input to the community. The PSAC, National Component and Local 80016 would like to thank all those who supported our campaign through lobbying, signing petitions, conducting demonstrations, protest rallying, attending meetings and other contributions. You helped us make the difference. For more information, visit the National Component Stop Privatization of Highland Links page.
